There are a few warning signs that will show that you may be dealing with a SEO company that violates the search engines terms and conditions.

It's important that you don't work with a company that employs black hat SEO techniques which will result in your website being permanently banned from search engines like Google.

For example, in an attempt to manipulate rankings these companies will use the same keyword over and over again on a page with a white background and then highlight those keywords and put them all in white, hoping to trick the search engines.

Another black hat practice that is the use of 'doorway' pages. These pages are standalone pages designed only to act as doorways to your site and are created to do well for particular phrases.

The fact is that doorway pages don't do a very good job of generating traffic and could get your site de-indexed from Google.

So, without going into too much detail you can see why it is important to stay away from a SEO or Internet Marketing company that uses black hat strategies.

Search engines are much smarter now because of these different techniques and shortcuts people have tried in the past...

Also keep in mind, that Google search results includes paid advertisements (Sponsored links) which is known as pay per click (PPC) and should not be confused with search engine optimization.

Here are four different scenarios that could mean your SEO company is taking you for a ride.



1. After 6 months your traffic remains the same - Fire Your SEO Company

It is highly unlikely that after 6 months into a campaign you're not seeing any results in search traffic. Perhaps your SEO company is not working at all or perhaps the keywords they are targeting are wrong.

Although extremely competitive keywords have the potential to bring in more traffic, it will take longer (up to 24 months) to optimize for such search terms.

To maximize your ROI your SEO company should rather choose a combination of low, moderate and high competition keywords.

If your SEO company has not take this approach you know that it is time to get rid of them.


2. Traffic Increases But No Conversions - Fire Your SEO Company

You may find that your traffic shoots through the roof, but you are not getting any conversions. This may be a genuine mistake that could be rectified.

But, if you're getting plenty of traffic and haven't made any conversions, a red flag should immediately go up.

Any company can double its traffic, but if you're getting a lot of traffic from visitors with little or no relevance to your business it won't do you any good.

In an effort to gain credibility unethical SEO companies will buy links from spam sites or get traffic from 'fake' search engines or spyware to show stats of increase in traffic.

One way to combat this from happening is to install Google analytics on your site and visit the traffic sources. If everything seems fine, the problem may be with your website.

After all, the effectiveness of search engine optimization depends on site structure, site content, keywords and how popular your site is.

Okay, there is no guarantee you will always reach the front page, but if you haven't even made it to the second page of Google, then there is a problem.

The keywords may be too competitive, or the SEO company isn't doing their job right. There is a fine line here, because it's possible your keyword movement just needs a little push.

Make sure your SEO company provides you with monthly reports. This should include what on-page search engine optimization changes were made and the locations of the back links they have put in place.

You should also get a Google Analytics report that will give you an idea of the traffic results.

You will find that it's more of an "honor system" than anything else. The only way to overcome it is by keeping in contact with your SEO company constantly.
