How to Advertise on Google

There are some basic things you must be aware when learning how to advertise on Google. A lot of people get confused about terms like search engine optimization and search engine marketing and each of these terms have a different meaning.

When someone visits a search engine like Google, the search engine will help them to find what they’re looking for quickly and effectively. When a user types a word or phrase, also called a search query, into the search box of Google, the search engine would then show that user a set of results based on his or her query.

Search engines will display two types of results listings to a user who enters a query: organic also called free listings and paid listings (“sponsored links”) which is part of Google’s advertising platform.

Although you’ll see both organic and paid results when you do a search on Google, the ranking of each are not dependant on each other. In other words, each type of listing – organic and paid – relevancy is calculated in a different way.


Search engine optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your website so that they rank highly in Google’s organic listings when someone is looking for your product or services.

In terms of Google’s organic results, relevancy to the user’s search query is calculated by more than 200 factors. One of these factors is the PageRank (PR) which assigns a value to every page online that it uses to determine the importance of a page.

With all other things being equal, the higher your PR the more important you are to Google and the higher you wil show up in the organic search results compared to your competitors.


Search Engine Marketing

Search engine marketing (SEM) is the process of advertising (paid listings) your website on Google and other search engines.

To advertise on Google you’ll first need to create an account and then create your ad by entering a list of keywords that can trigger your ad to be shown when someone searches for your product or services online.

You can choose between a pay-per-click (PPC) or a cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) pricing model.

PPC basically means that you will only pay when someone clicks your ad and not for the ad impression (when your ad appears on the page). For example, if your ad appears 100 times and you receive 10 clicks, you will only be charged for those 10 clicks.

With CPM you will not pay for any clicks on your ad but only for impressions of your ad
