If you have been allocated a poor Quality Score (QS), you may be using keywords, ads, or landing pages that aren’t as targeted or relevant as they could be. If this is the case your ads will show very rarely and your minimum bids will be very high.

You can visit the ‘Keywords’ tab in your account and open the Keyword Analysis field to see what needs improvement.

To improve your Quality Score there should be a high level of continuity and relevancy from the search term to the ad text and to your landing page content.

 Although your landing page cannot improve your QS it can negatively impact upon your QS if the landing page is not relevant to the search query and the ad text. If you apply basic SEO principles to your landing pages then you will probably not be penalized for a low QS based upon your landing page quality.

Go through your keyword list and delete keywords that are general in nature and which are not relevant to the products or services you’re trying to promote. Tightly themed keywords, relevance to the ad text and landing page are important factors that improve Quality Score.

Know your audience and understand what their needs and expectations are so that you can write better targeted ads.

Keep in mind that ultimately it is the user who decides what is relevant and what is not relevant. If they decide to click on your ad after searching for a particular keyword consistently it is obviously relevant to them and the Adwords system will detect this and reward you with a higher Quality Score.

By far the most important factor of keyword Quality Score is your clickthrough rate (CTR). It is virtually impossible to have a good keyword QS if your ads have a very poor CTR.

If your CTR is low then you need to focus on writing better ads and targeted more specific keywords. Optimization remains the best way to improve the relevance and QS of your keywords.
