The idea behind search engines optimization is to increase traffic to your site as the name would suggest through search engines. Like we do ourselves, most people that browse the internet make use of search engines to find information they're looking for.
Keywords are used to look up information on the Internet and search engines will compare keywords with all the sites they have in their database. When the engine finds a potential match, that site will be listed in the search engine results for a searcher to have a look at.
The more keyword matches search engines like Google can find on your site, the higher your placement would be in these search results.
However, most searchers would only pay attention to the first two pages. Actually 84% of searchers never make it past page two of the search engine results.
So, if your not listed for your keyword on those top pages, you'll find it extremely hard to get traffic to your website. So this is where the practice of search engines optimization comes in, to help you to get to the top of the engines search results.
Optimization Your Keywords
If you want to improve your website ranking you should also have a specific keyword that’s optimized for each of your web pages. Preferably it should be a keyword that's searched a lot, but it doesn't have too much competition. Remember to maintain a keyword density of between 2 – 5% to boost your pages into the Top 10 spots of the search engines.
If you overdo this, it will be considered "keyword stuffing" and you will not get the results you wanted.
Optimize for Content
Another important part of search engines optimization is to populate your website with unique content. Search engines like Google just love fresh content and if you can keep your site updated search engines can help you to get more visitors to your site.
